The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.
Personally, as a Mother I don't celebrate this holiday yet, I still focus on my Mom.... but is being a Mom more important than being a woman?
When do we become maternal providers and no longer women? Are both roles in sync or out of sync? Are we juggling both roles as we question play dates and after school classes and college applications? Anna Jarvis founded Mother's Day in the US as a testament to her mother and as a symbol of the dedication, sacrifice and hard work that all mothers gave to their families and children especially during times of war or poverty. Jarvis was passionate about recognizing women and made it her mission to commemorate a day to recognize mothers.
I want my husband to see me as a woman first not only as a mom. He already has a mother. I believe Mother's Day is also a celebration of womanhood after all it is the "act of sex" that lead to your role as a mom. Luna Lugo
